PETITION AGAINST THE ILLEGAL DETENTION, ATTEMPTED MURDER, MALICIOUS PROSECUTION AND GROSS PROFESSIONAL MISCONDUCT FROM POLICE OFFICERS MONSURU AND RASHID OF THE SPECIAL ANTI-ROBBERY SQUAD

We are a non-governmental, non-religious and non-ethnic organization with a view to enhancing respect for the rule of law, promote good practice, investigate and expose perceived human right breach and we are hereby writing this petition on behalf of Revd Apostle Anthony Olaolu KUSHIMO (hereinafter referred to as our “victim”) in order to protect his rights and obligations.

The victim is a peace loving and law abiding citizen who operates his chemist shop at Erunwon in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The victim informed us that on the 9th of February 2012 he went across the road opposite his chemist shop to charge his phone and on his way back to his shop he heard loud cries of THIEF THIEF in which people started running and the victim not knowing the direction from which the thieves were coming from also ran and hid in a shop but got shot on his knee by a police officer later identified as Monsuru, he was blamed by other police officers after discovering the victim was not the thief they were looking for, they left the victim in the pool of his blood and ran away.

The victim informed us that some sympathizers took him to Oke-Toku Police station to get a police report for his treatment at the hospital and was later rushed to Ogun State General Hospital at Ijaye, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The victim informed us that the Hospital referred him to another hospital for some x-rays and on his way back from the x-ray, some officers of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad arrested him and took him to their office at Magbon where he was illegally detained for 37 days without treating the bullet wound. The victim informed us that the name of the I. P. O. attached to his case is Rashid who later charged him to court when the pain of the bullet became unbearable

The victim informed us that he was charged with Armed Robbery and remanded in prison custody by the Magistrate Court. The victim informed us that the prison authorities subsequently took him to the hospital in which he was admitted for 3 months but by that time, the damage done by the bullet from the officer’s gun to the victim’s leg was irreparable and the victim had been condemned to a life of walking stick forever. The victim informed us that his family members had sold all his landed property and personal belongings during the treatment of his leg just to salvage it but could not prevent it from being outrightly amputated.

The victim informed us that in 2014, he was discharged from the court pursuant to a legal advice of no case to answer by the Attorney General. A copy of the certified true copy of the court’s proceedings and legal advice is hereby attached to this letter for ease of reference. The victim informed us that ever since that time your officer Monsuru illegal shot at the victim, the victim’s life had never been the same again. The victim lives from hand to mouth and lives only on charity. Not even a word of apology from officer Monsuru or the Nigerian Police Force on this wrongful act.

It would be highly appreciated if our petition is thoroughly investigated and this Officers Monsuru and Ahmed are brought to book for their criminal and dastardly act. We believe that these officers are the bad eggs in the Nigeria Police Force and are not fit and proper to be called police officers. We also believe further that if they are further retained in this prestigious force, they are going to perpetrate worse acts which would put the whole of Nigeria as a country to shame.
